What I like most about my job:
Listening to client’s stories and learning about their personal journey.

Rachel Subchyshyn has worked in private practice and as a school counsellor since 2002. Her therapeutic approach to counselling has been strongly informed by a developmental approach to understanding human behaviour. In addition, Rachel recently completed extensive training in a therapeutic model called Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) that has been gaining recognition worldwide for its effectiveness and client-centred philosophy.

Though formal learning opportunities have provided her with a strong foundation and invaluable insight from which to work with clients, Rachel asserts that her greatest education has come from the relationships she has developed with the clients she has been blessed to work with over the course of her career.

Rachel believes that a cooperative and collaborative relationship based on mutual respect and understanding provides the foundation from which the best work can be done. She sees her role as helping clients develop and expand on their ability to be present and make room for their emotions while helping them connect with their values and the person they most want to be in their hearts. Once a strong connection to ‘what matters’ is established, clients are better able to tap into their own wisdom and strength to cope with and rise above the challenges they are facing. In her experience, when clients and therapists work together to determine the direction counselling will go, clients experience a new level of energy, develop a willingness to face challenges and are able to make choices that move them toward a better life.
