Our Philosophy

PPC – The Philosophy

People tend to resist change in their lives. Not only may working toward change be difficult but change itself may be hard to accept. PPC specializes in creative incentives for change. Our programs assist employees and organizations to assess difficulties, design plans for resolution and develop the required skills to maximize potential. PPC’s practical philosophy enables our clients to acquire the primary methods for efficient problem solving.

“It is never too late to be what you might have been”

-George Elliot

Access

The problem solving methods we use are based on the clients needs, not our subjectivity. This sensitivity to client needs begins at the moment of the phone call. Emergency appointments are seen the day of the call, within hours if required. PPC understands the importance of timing for people experiencing acute stress and anxiety so uses cellular emergency lines for you or your employees to access all day, every day.

Assessment: Nature, Severity, Extent

At the point of the assessment the counsellor inquires about the nature of the person’s difficulty, determines the severity and ascertains the presence of other compounding factors and issues. Many times this is the time where you find family of origin, addictions or compulsions, medical complications or work issues which in fact have caused the presenting problem.

Well-Grounded Intervention Program

By the conclusion of the first session an intervention plan is mutually drawn. The plan is specific, action oriented and grounded in values to measure the success and progress. Depending on the clients needs these plans can be exhaustive and sophisticated or very simple and common sense. The client decides what they believe would be most effective.

“The significant problems we have cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them”

-Albert Einstein

Optimal Growth Philosophy

The counselling itself may be behavioural, emotive, cognitive or a combination of all three. Sometimes actions, feelings and thoughts become so interwoven it is difficult for the client to discern. We work with the client to match the need with the best methodology to resolve the situation.

Our counsellors use Rational Emotive Therapy, Reality Therapy and Control Theory, Systems Approach, Heimler Method, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Transactional Analysis, an Adlerian/Dreikurs approach or a more basic life skills model when engaging in the treatment process.

To aid in this process, clients are encouraged to view educational videos, listen to audio tapes or read books from our bookstore or library, complete routine homework assignments and become involved in appropriate self help groups. Our general philosophy strives to equip the client with the required tools and skills for optimal growth while carefully encouraging independence and selfhood versus any dependence on the counsellor.

PPC – The Emphasis

One of the most dynamic features to PPC service is an emphasis on wellness. We strive to accentuate the value and worth of our clientele, not concentrate on the seemingly overwhelming problem. We find our value on wellness impacts our treatment outcome in a positive fashion.

PPC provides workshops on marital enrichment, career planning, vocational development, effective parenting, living with chronic pain, weight control, effectively managing one’s temper to list only a few. These workshops are provided in the evenings over a period of four to eight weeks or on concentrated weekend formats. The EFAP committee determines the most effective method of offering these programs. It is our belief that we can better assist the company and the individual by working from a proactive stance. Our philosophy aims to head concerns off through preventative programming to prevent crisis management counselling.

Established Chemical Dependency Competence

Referrals to inpatient treatment centers are made for chemically dependent cases, however, only when; a) a physical requirement is assessed b) an extensive defense system (characteristic of the chemically dependent) is active or c) if the employee is in job, legal or marital jeopardy and may experience significant consequences if major changes do not occur quickly. The balance of cases we find an outpatient model with reliance on self help groups is just as effective.

Several PPC staff are either certified alcoholism counsellors or have been previously employed as full time alcohol drug counsellors with inpatient treatment centers. Needless to say, most of the PPC staff are very comfortable and competent in their treatment of substance abuse.

Stress Makes Work and Life Difficult

An Employee and Family Assistance Program is a system of resolving the difficulties of working people and their families. When personal stress is making life difficult, it can also make work difficult. It is a service which provides confidential assistance and counselling to resolve personal problems of an employee or an employee’s family, spouse and children. The care and attention of a PPC program will help your employees accurately assess their stress and find a way to quickly resolve it.

Marital Conflict, Financial Strain, Emotional Unhappiness: EFAP Makes the Difference

Our program is established to assist people experiencing marital conflict, alcohol abuse or other drug related problems, financial strain, work pressure or emotional unhappiness.

Sometimes people can solve these on their own; other times PPC intervention will make the difference between stopping a problem cold or going through a long period of struggling and coping. These are periods when employees are unable to be themselves at work, at home or within the community.
